Professor Li Meijin talks about depression: Let children engage in physical exercise when they were young

Depression has now become a social problem that is worthy of attention. According to statistics, there are currently more than 300 million people suffering from depression in the world, and a large number of depression patients die by suicide every year. It is especially distressing that patients with depression are now becoming younger, and many adolescent children or college students who have just ended adolescence have unfortunately committed suicide because of depression.

So, how can we keep children mentally healthy and avoid depression? Professor Li Meijin, a professor at the People’s Public Security University of China, a well-known criminal psychology expert, and family education expert, once expressed his views on this issue. The professor believes that depression is caused by an imbalance between brain activity and physical activity. Patients with depression generally think too much and do too little.

To keep her children mentally healthy and away from the danger of depression, Professor Li Meijin believes that the best way is to let children receive more physical exercises and undergo physical pain when they are young. Especially before the child is 10 years old, the physical training of physical pain is the most effective, because this stage is the most critical period for the formation of the child's mental model.

As long as a child has undergone a lot of physical training when he was young, his ability to withstand pain and setbacks will be greatly enhanced. When a child experiences pain again and again during the process of physical exercise, his mental toughness will continue to improve. When he encounters setbacks and pains when he grows up, he will have the experience and confidence to overcome. Therefore, Professor Li Meijin believes that no matter how high or low a child’s IQ is, whether he is successful in his career after he grows up, as long as he has received a lot of physical training and pain when he was a child, he will mostly be happy in his later years.

Of course, from the perspective of children's mental health, although physical exercise is very important, it also requires the cooperation of other factors. For example, a harmonious and friendly family atmosphere, a positive outlook on life, values, and good interpersonal skills. Therefore, while guiding their children to participate in more physical exercises, parents cannot ignore the impact of other factors on their children’s psychological development.
